Diamond cutting electric car wheels: why we advise against it
This is a position that costs us work, and we hold it anyway. If you have an electric car with kerbed diamond-cut wheels, please read this before you book anything, with us or anyone else.
The issue
Diamond cutting removes material from the face of a wheel. That is not a side effect; it is the process. Every cut takes a few tenths of a millimetre of aluminium off, permanently.
On a conventional car, that is a well-understood trade-off with a comfortable margin behind it. On an electric car, the margins are different. EVs are heavy — a battery pack adds several hundred kilos — and manufacturers claw back weight everywhere else, aggressively, including in the wheels. Combine that with the instantly available torque an electric motor puts through those wheels and you have a component that is both lighter and more heavily loaded than its equivalent on a combustion car.
The honest bit: we do not have the numbers
Here is the part the industry does not say out loud. Manufacturers do not generally publish a minimum material thickness for their wheels, on any car. So when a refinisher tells you an EV wheel is fine to cut, they are not consulting a spec — they are making a judgement call based on experience with other wheels.
That judgement is usually reasonable. But "usually reasonable" is a different standard from "known to be within tolerance", and on a component where the design margin has been deliberately minimised, we do not think the gap between those two things is ours to close on your behalf.
What we recommend instead
Powder coating. A solid colour, or a metallic, or a satin — properly stripped, coated and oven-cured. It removes no material at all. It is tougher than a diamond cut and lasts fifteen to twenty years with sensible care. It is cheaper. And on a modern EV, which tends to have a clean, minimal design language anyway, a set of wheels in satin black or anthracite very often looks better than the factory two-tone did.
We have done a lot of Teslas, Polestars, ID range cars, Kias and Ioniqs this way and we have not had one customer come back unhappy about it.
If you want it cut anyway
You are entitled to. It is your car. What we ask is that you contact the wheel manufacturer or the vehicle manufacturer first, establish whether diamond cutting is acceptable on that specific wheel and what the minimum thickness is, and come back to us with that. If the answer is yes and there is material to spare, we will do it properly.
What we will not do is take the job, say nothing, and let you assume it was fine because nobody mentioned it.

Why do EV wheels have tighter weight margins?
Battery packs add several hundred kilograms, so manufacturers reduce weight aggressively everywhere else — including the wheels. Those lighter wheels then have to handle the instant torque of an electric motor, so the design margin is deliberately smaller than on an equivalent combustion car.
Will diamond cutting void my EV warranty?
That is a question for your manufacturer, and it is one worth asking before the wheel is on a lathe rather than after. We ask EV customers to check with the wheel or vehicle manufacturer about acceptable material removal before we proceed.
