Caring for your refurbished alloy wheels
A powder-coated finish is tough, but it is not indestructible — and the first month matters most. Looked after correctly, a set of wheels we have refinished can stay looking showroom-fresh for fifteen to twenty years. Here is exactly how to treat them.
The first few days matter
A fresh finish needs a little time to settle. For the first four weeks, go easy on it — get this right and the finish rewards you for years.
- Give the finish time to fully settle in.
- Avoid harsh cleaners for the first four weeks.
- Hand wash only, and gently.
Cleaning 101: keep it simple
Nothing exotic is needed. The simplest routine is the best one for the finish:
- Use mild car soap and water.
- Use a soft microfibre cloth or a soft wheel brush.
- Rinse thoroughly.
- Dry with a clean microfibre towel.
What not to do
- Don't use acid-based or abrasive wheel cleaners.
- Don't use steel wool or stiff brushes.
- Don't let brake dust bake on for weeks.
- Don't power wash from two inches away like you are blasting graffiti off a wall.
Chemicals to avoid
Keep these well away from a fresh finish: acid wheel cleaners, abrasive polishes, harsh degreasers and solvents.
Extra protection, if you want it
None of this is essential, but any of it makes cleaning easier and helps repel brake dust: a spray wax, a ceramic spray coating, or a dedicated wheel sealant.
The final rule: treat them like you love them
Powder coating is extremely durable — but not indestructible. A little routine care keeps your wheels looking incredible for years: wash them regularly, and avoid harsh chemicals. Do that and there is no reason a set should not last fifteen to twenty years. Thanks for trusting us with your wheels — now go and turn some heads.
Quick answers
How soon can I wash my newly refurbished wheels?
You can rinse them gently straight away, but avoid harsh cleaners and stick to a gentle hand wash for the first four weeks while the finish fully settles. After that, normal washing is fine.
What cleaner is safe on powder-coated alloys?
Mild car shampoo and water, applied with a soft microfibre cloth or soft wheel brush, then rinsed and dried with a microfibre towel. Avoid acid-based, abrasive or solvent-based wheel cleaners.
How long will a refurbished finish last?
With correct care — regular gentle washing and no harsh chemicals — a powder-coated finish can last fifteen to twenty years. Neglect, acidic cleaners and baked-on brake dust are what shorten it.
Should I put a wax or ceramic coating on my alloys?
It is optional, but a spray wax, ceramic spray or wheel sealant makes cleaning easier and helps repel brake dust. It is a sensible bit of extra protection on a fresh finish.
