Division one — Wheels

Buckled Alloy Wheel Straightening

That steering wobble at 60 that no amount of balancing fixes is almost always a buckled rim. We straighten and true wheels on a dedicated machine, measuring runout rather than eyeballing it.

A buckle is what happens when the rim flange takes a hit hard enough to deform it — a pothole edge, a sunken drain, a kerb taken at an angle. The tyre often survives, which is why people drive on for weeks wondering why the car has developed a vibration. The clue is that it comes in at a specific speed and it does not respond to balancing.

We mount the wheel on a straightening machine and measure the runout — both lateral (side to side) and radial (up and down) — so we know exactly where the deformation is and how far out it runs. Then the affected section is heated and worked back with hydraulic pressure, and re-measured until it is true.

Not every buckle is straightenable. If the flange has cracked, if the aluminium has been worked hard before, or if the deformation runs into the spoke area, then straightening it is a bad idea and we will say so. A wheel that has been bent, straightened, bent and straightened again has had its structure fatigued, and there comes a point where the right answer is a replacement.

Where a buckle sits alongside a crack — which is common, since the same impact causes both — we weld first, then straighten, then refinish. In that order, always.

Common questions

What does a buckled wheel feel like?

A vibration that arrives at a particular speed — usually somewhere between 50 and 70 — and stays regardless of how many times the wheel is balanced. It often feels like it is in the steering wheel if it is a front, or in the seat if it is a rear.

Can any buckle be straightened?

No. Small to moderate flange deformation, yes, routinely. Severe buckles, buckles that have cracked, and buckles into the spoke area are not safely repairable. We measure first and tell you honestly.

Do I need a new tyre as well?

Often, yes — the same impact that bends a rim frequently damages the tyre's internal structure. We will show you the inside of the tyre once it is off; a bulge or a bruise on the inner liner means it needs replacing.

Can you straighten and refurbish in one go?

Yes, and it is the sensible way to do it. The wheel is already off the car and stripped, so straightening at that point costs you nothing extra in labour.
