Diamond cut alloys: why they go cloudy, and how they are fixed
If your wheels look like someone breathed on them and it never wore off, this is the article you are looking for. The good news is that it is fixable. The bad news is that no product in any shop is going to do it.
What a diamond-cut wheel actually is
A diamond-cut wheel is powder coated in a base colour — usually black, anthracite or silver — and then mounted on a CNC lathe. A single-point diamond-tipped tool skims a few tenths of a millimetre off the raised faces, cutting through the base colour to reveal bright aluminium underneath and leaving the characteristic fine concentric grooves. Those grooves are why it catches light the way it does: they are a diffraction surface, not a polish.
Then it is lacquered. And that lacquer is the entire story of everything that follows.
Why they go cloudy
Under the clear coat is bare, freshly machined aluminium. Not anodised, not primed, not painted — bare. The lacquer is the only thing between it and the weather.
Breach that lacquer anywhere — a stone chip, a kerb scuff, a wheel-cleaning product that is harsher than the label suggests, or simply UV and heat cycling over five or six years — and moisture gets underneath. Aluminium oxidises. The oxide is white and powdery. It spreads outward from the breach, tracking under the clear coat, and it lifts the lacquer as it goes, which lets in more water, which spreads it further.
The three stages, and why catching it early is cheaper
- Cloudy. A hazy, milky look, usually starting at the rim edge or around a chip. The metal is oxidising but not pitted. A light skim removes it.
- Worming. White, branching lines under the clear coat spreading from the rim inward — this is the classic "white worm". The lacquer is now lifting. Still recoverable, but it needs a deeper cut.
- Pitted. The oxide has eaten into the surface. Now the lathe has to cut below the bottom of the pits to reach clean metal, which uses a meaningful chunk of the wheel's remaining life in a single pass.
The practical point: a wheel caught at "cloudy" might be good for another two or three cuts over its life. The same wheel left for three years until it is pitted might have one left. Diamond-cut wheels have a finite number of cuts in them, and leaving corrosion to develop spends them faster.
What the repair involves
The old lacquer is stripped completely. The wheel is checked for cracks and buckles while it is bare — a lot of lacquer failure starts at an impact, so it is worth looking. The base colour is powder coated fresh if needed. Then the wheel goes on the lathe and the face is machined back to clean, bright metal, with a fresh cut across the whole face so the grooves are consistent rather than patched.
Then it is lacquered with a corrosion-inhibiting clear and cured. And that is genuinely all anyone can do — the physics of bare metal under a clear coat has not changed.
Why a diamond-cut finish has a shorter life
A diamond-cut finish has a shorter, finite life than powder coat — and no refinisher thinking clearly about it, nor the manufacturers who fitted them in the first place, will tell you otherwise. The reason is structural to the process rather than a matter of workmanship: how long a lacquer over bare aluminium survives depends on the quality of the original casting (porosity varies enormously), the road salt it meets, the products it is cleaned with, and luck with stone chips.
We use a market-leading corrosion-inhibiting lacquer specifically to push that as far as it will go. But anyone promising it will last like paintwork is promising you something the weather has the final say over.
The alternative worth considering
Powder coating in a solid colour lasts fifteen to twenty years with sensible care, is dramatically more durable, and is repairable cheaply next time. Plenty of our customers arrive wanting a diamond cut and leave having chosen satin black or anthracite, because once the trade-off is explained they would rather have the wheel that lasts.
It is not a downgrade. It is a different set of priorities. If the car is a garaged weekend thing, cut it. If it does 20,000 salty miles a year on the A127, coat it.

Why are my diamond cut alloys going white and cloudy?
The lacquer has been breached and moisture has reached the bare machined aluminium underneath, which is oxidising. The white haze and branching "worm" lines are corrosion sitting under the clear coat, spreading outward from the breach. It is not dirt and it will not clean off.
Can cloudy diamond cut wheels be cleaned or polished?
No. The corrosion is underneath the lacquer, so polishing the surface achieves nothing. The only fix is to strip the lacquer, machine the face back to clean metal on a lathe, and re-lacquer.
How many times can a diamond cut wheel be re-cut?
Typically two to four times over the wheel's life, depending on the casting and how much material each cut has to remove. Corrosion that has been left to pit requires a deeper cut and uses that allowance faster.
How long does a diamond-cut finish last?
Less than powder coat, and it varies. The process leaves bare machined aluminium directly beneath a clear coat, so its life depends on casting quality, road salt, cleaning products and stone chips. A corrosion-inhibiting lacquer extends it, but no one honest will promise it lasts like a painted or powder-coated finish.
