Buckled alloy wheels: the signs, the causes, and when it can be straightened
You have had it balanced twice. It still shakes at 60 and only at 60. Nobody can find anything wrong. Here is what is wrong.
What a buckle actually is
A buckle is permanent deformation of the rim — usually the flange, sometimes the barrel. Something hit it hard enough to bend aluminium past its elastic limit: a pothole with a square edge, a sunken drain cover, a kerb taken at an angle, a speed cushion met at the wrong speed.
The tyre often survives, which is precisely the problem. There is no bang, no flat, no obvious moment. You just notice a few weeks later that the car has developed a wobble.
The symptom that gives it away
A buckle produces a vibration at a specific speed band — very often somewhere between 50 and 70 — that arrives, peaks and then eases as you go faster. And critically, it does not respond to balancing. That is the diagnostic. A wheel that has been balanced properly and still vibrates is not an imbalance problem.
Front buckles usually come through the steering wheel. Rears come through the seat and the floor. If you cannot tell which, that is normal — most people cannot until it is on the machine.
How it is measured
Properly, a buckle is measured rather than eyeballed. The wheel goes on a straightening machine and a dial gauge measures runout in two directions as it rotates:
- Lateral runout — side-to-side wobble. This is the one you feel most.
- Radial runout — the wheel not being perfectly round. This produces a hop rather than a wobble.
Most wheels have some runout from new; nothing is perfect. What matters is how much, and where. Measuring tells us the extent of the damage, exactly where it sits, and — importantly — whether the wheel has been straightened before, because a previously worked area behaves differently under heat and pressure.
The straightening process
The affected section is heated in a controlled way — aluminium becomes workable well below its melting point — and hydraulic pressure is applied to bring it back. Then it is re-measured. Then, usually, adjusted again. It is an iterative job rather than one big push, and rushing it is how you crack a rim.
Because the wheel is on the machine anyway, this is also when we find out whether the impact cracked it as well as bending it. That happens more often than you would think — the same hit does both. When it does, the order is: weld first, then straighten, then refinish. Every time.
When we will not straighten a wheel
- Severe deformation. There is a limit, and past it the aluminium has been fatigued rather than bent.
- A buckle that has cracked. Weld it first, or scrap it — but do not straighten a crack.
- Deformation running into the spoke area. That is structure, not rim.
- A wheel that has been bent and straightened repeatedly. Aluminium work-hardens every time. Eventually it has had enough, and the honest answer is a replacement.
Do not forget the tyre
The impact that bent your rim very often damaged the tyre's internal structure too. A bulge in the sidewall, or a bruise visible on the inner liner once the tyre is off, means the carcass is compromised and the tyre needs replacing — regardless of how much tread is on it.
