Is it worth paying for a website?

If the website needs to bring in customers, almost always yes. A free or DIY site can work as a placeholder, but it usually looks templated, loads slower and caps how well you rank — and a site nobody finds or trusts is the most expensive kind, because it costs you the customers it should have won.

A professionally built site is faster, designed around your brand, and built to be found on Google from day one. The old barrier was the upfront cost, but pay-monthly (around £50 a month, everything included) removes it. The honest test isn't the price tag — it's whether the site earns more than it costs. A good one pays for itself many times over.
