Small business websites, done right.

We audited 932 UK small businesses' online presence in 2026 — what follows is the honest picture of what works, what fails, what it costs, and how to get it right, whether you build with me or with anyone else.

Quick answer

A good small business website in 2026 is fast on phones, secure (HTTPS), findable (technical SEO plus a tended Google Business Profile), machine-readable (structured data, which AI assistants now rely on), and genuinely useful to a customer deciding whether to call you. In our July 2026 audit of 421 small-business websites, 79% failed at least one of those tests and 1 in 7 was broken outright. Costs range from DIY builders (cheap upfront, costly in time and ceilings) to agencies (£1,500–£6,000+) to pay-monthly models like ours from £499.99 + £49.99/month with everything included.

What a small business website must do in 2026

Five jobs, in order: load instantly on a phone (where most local searches happen); prove trustworthiness — HTTPS, real photos, reviews, a human being visible; answer the deciding questions — what you do, where, for how much, how to reach you; be readable by machines — structured data now feeds both Google and the AI assistants a growing share of customers ask first; and convert — a visible phone number, a form that works, a reason to act. Everything else is decoration.

What actually goes wrong (from our audit data)

We measure this rather than guess: across 421 audited small-business websites, 79% carried at least one technical fault, 14.7% were unreachable when we visited, 28.5% had no structured data, and 17.8% displayed copyright years as old as 2011. And 15.5% of the 932 businesses surveyed had no website at all. The pattern behind nearly all of it is the same: sites get built once and abandoned — which is why maintenance matters more than any launch-day feature.

What it should cost

The honest market: DIY builders run £0–£30/month and cost you evenings, sameness and low ceilings — fine for testing an idea, limiting for a real business (our builders-vs-bespoke guide is fair to both sides). Freelancers typically charge £500–£2,500 upfront; agencies £1,500–£6,000+ plus ongoing fees. My model: bespoke and hand-coded from £499.99 + £49.99/month with hosting, unlimited updates and ongoing SEO included — full comparison on the pricing page, and a cost calculator if you want a number for your specific needs.

Getting found: the part most sites skip

A website nobody finds is a brochure in a drawer. The findability stack for a small business: technical SEO baked into the build; a Google Business Profile treated as a live channel with real reviews; consistent business details across the web; content that answers what customers actually search; and structured data for the AI-search era. It's the exact playbook behind this site ranking #2 for "web design essex" — laid out with receipts on the SEO page and testable on any site via the free health checker.

How to choose who builds it

Whoever you're considering — including me — verify rather than trust: check their own rankings, read their Google reviews, open three client sites on your phone, find their pricing. Our guide to choosing a web designer turns that into a five-minute test anyone can run. The right builder passes it comfortably.

Common questions

Does my small business really need a website in 2026?

If customers ever search for what you do, yes — 15.5% of businesses we surveyed had none, handing every one of those searches to competitors. Social media profiles rank poorly, look less credible for bigger jobs, and aren't yours.

What should a small business website cost in the UK?

DIY builders £0–£30/month plus your time; freelancers £500–£2,500; agencies £1,500–£6,000+. My bespoke pay-monthly model runs £499.99 to build then £49.99/month with hosting, updates and SEO included.

How many pages does a small business website need?

Usually five to eight done well: home, services (one per major service), about, contact, and proof (reviews or work). Depth beats breadth — a thin ten-page site loses to a substantial five-page one.

What makes a small business website rank on Google?

Technical health, genuinely useful content matching what customers search, a tended Google Business Profile with reviews, consistent details across the web, and structured data. Built over months, not bought in days.
