Can AI build a website?

AI can generate a rough website in minutes — but 'a website' and 'a website that works for your business' are very different things. An honest look from someone who uses AI daily.

Yes, AI can build a basic website in minutes — and no, that usually isn't the website your business actually needs. AI is brilliant at generating a rough draft, but it can't make the judgement calls that decide whether a site loads fast, ranks on Google, reflects your brand, and converts visitors into customers. The honest answer: AI is a powerful tool for a good developer, not a replacement for one.

What AI does well

  • Speed — a first draft of layout and copy in seconds.
  • Starting points — ideas, structure and placeholder content to build on.
  • Helping the developer — I use AI daily to work faster; it's part of how I keep prices low.

Where AI falls short

AI-built sites tend to look generic (everyone gets similar output), carry bloated code that slows pages, and miss the strategic decisions that matter: what your specific customers need to see first, how to structure the site so Google ranks it, what actually turns a visitor into an enquiry. AI also can't run your Google Business Profile, respond to a problem at 9pm, or update the site as your business changes. Those are exactly the things that decide whether a website earns its keep.

The sensible middle

The best results come from a developer using AI as a tool — fast where speed helps, human where judgement matters. That's how I build: AI handles the grunt work so I can spend the time on design, strategy, SEO and looking after your site, and pass the efficiency on as a lower price. You get the speed of AI and the judgement of a person, rather than one without the other.

AI can build a website. It can't yet decide what your business needs, make it rank, or pick up the phone when something breaks — which is most of the job.
Can AI build a website for my business?

AI can generate a basic site quickly, but it can't make the design, SEO and strategy decisions that make a website actually work — or support it afterwards. It's a great tool for a developer, not a replacement for one.

Are AI-built websites any good?

They're fine as rough drafts but tend to look generic, carry slow bloated code, and miss the strategic and local-SEO decisions that get a business found and converting. The best results come from a developer using AI as a tool.

Do you use AI to build websites?

Yes — I use AI daily to work faster, which is part of how I keep prices at £50 a month. But the design, strategy, SEO and ongoing support are human, because that's what actually makes a site perform.
