What is local SEO?

What local SEO is, how it works, and the handful of things that genuinely move you up the local results — in plain English.

Local SEO is the practice of getting your business found for location-based searches — things like "plumber near me" or "hairdresser in Chelmsford" — and, crucially, into Google's map pack: the little map with three business listings that sits at the top of local results. For any business that serves a local area, it's the single most valuable form of SEO, because that map pack is where most local clicks and calls come from.

How local SEO works

Google decides local rankings on three broad things: relevance (does your business match the search?), distance (how close are you to the searcher?), and prominence (how well-known and trusted are you?). You can't change distance, but you can strongly influence relevance and prominence — and that's what local SEO does.

The levers that actually move it

  • Google Business Profile — the biggest one. A complete, accurate, active Profile is what gets you into the map pack. Fill in everything: services, hours, photos, area.
  • Reviews — quantity, quality and recency of Google reviews heavily influence local rankings and whether people click you. Ask every happy customer.
  • Consistent NAP — your Name, Address and Phone number identical everywhere online (site, Profile, directories).
  • Local content on your site — service and area pages that clearly signal what you do and where.
  • Local citations and links — mentions and links from local and industry sites that build trust.

Why it matters so much

Most people searching for a local service never scroll past the map pack and the first couple of results. Being there isn't a nice-to-have — it's the difference between a phone that rings and one that doesn't. The good news is that local SEO is winnable for small businesses: a well-optimised site plus a strong Google Business Profile and steady reviews can outrank far bigger competitors locally.

For a local business, the Google Business Profile and reviews aren't a side task — they're the main event. Get those right and the map pack is within reach.

How do I improve my local SEO?

Start with a complete, active Google Business Profile, then build up genuine Google reviews, keep your name/address/phone consistent everywhere, add local service and area pages to your site, and earn local citations and links. The Profile and reviews carry the most weight.
